Por traduki la anglan vorton email oni bezonas surprize multajn ekvivalentojn, ĉar ĝi estas uzata en surprize multaj manieroj.
Malsame ol mail (poŝto), email povas esti gramatike ne nur nenombrebla sed ankaŭ nombrebla. Nenombreble: you can send mail, you can send email. Sendi poŝton, sendi retpoŝton. Nombreble: you can’t send “a mail” (though you might send out a mailing), but you can send an email (retmesaĝon, retleteron). Or three emails, tri retleterojn.
Malsame ol mail, la uzo de la vorto email ne malsamas inter Usono kaj Britujo. Americans mail letters (using the US Post Office), while we Brits post them (using the Royal Mail). But we all email one another: ni retpoŝtas, retleteras, aŭ retmesaĝas inter ni. And we all email documents to one another: ni sendas retpoŝte dokumentojn.
If I ask you for your email, I want to know your electronic address. (On the other hand I can’t ask you for your “mail” if I want to know your street address.) En Esperanto, mi petas vian retpoŝtan adreson.
